FOGG Notes: This guy could talk! I mean talk, talk and talk some more. It took everything I had to get Lucy away from him as he just basically gave us his life story. We found him stopping traffic for people crossing the street and he seemed friendly from afar, so I quickly said “Lets see if we can get him to do an interview!” 45 min later and 5 pages of written stuff I finally just started walking off as Lucy (who was translating and writing) was giving me the look of “HELP ME!” We found out he was policeman of the year for 7 years in a row, which he is now retired from law enforcement but still loves to “…help people in need and protect and serve.” Also that he was a former candidate for mayor of Arequipa in 2006, which I’m not sure what that means in South America. Does it mean he was actually running or that he had some pins and buttons made up…I’ll never fully know. But to be fair I liked the guy because he wa friendly and that’s what travel is all about. I have met plenty of traffic cops here in South America and now that I think of it, not one has ever talked to me or even given me a smile. Most just look at you like your dumb, “Move your ass gringo!” or just wave a finger at you. At least Eloy was happy we were crossing the street and that he could help us do that. Wish there were more traffic cops like him in the world, as you could really tell he loved his job.
